Board of Studies Approves Restructuring of 2.5-Year BS Chemistry (Lateral Entry) Program at University of Gwadar
- 21 Feb, 2026
The 3rd meeting of the Board of Studies (BoS) of the Department of Chemistry, University of Gwadar, was held in the PCT&VI UG Conference Room. The session was chaired by Dr. Mohib Ullah, Dean, Faculty of Science, Engineering & Technology, UG.
The Board confirmed the minutes of the 2nd BoS meeting after detailed review and deliberation. A key agenda item was the restructuring of the 2.5-year BS Chemistry (Lateral Entry) program in light of revised policies issued by the Higher Education Commission (HEC). The Chair informed members that the conventional 14-year BSc structure has been phased out and replaced with specialized BS programs under updated HEC guidelines.
Given that a limited number of students have already been admitted to the 2.5-year program, the Board discussed measures to ensure their smooth academic progression while maintaining regulatory compliance. After comprehensive deliberations, the Board resolved that students holding BSc and Associate Degree (AD) qualifications who have completed comparable core chemistry courses will be treated equivalently for academic purposes.
To align students’ academic backgrounds with BS degree requirements, deficiency (bridging) courses will be introduced. The University will offer one deficiency course per semester to enable students to address academic gaps in a structured manner. The restructured program will comprise five semesters, with all remaining required and deficiency courses to be completed by the end of the fifth semester.
In accordance with HEC directives and contemporary academic requirements, the Board also approved the inclusion of a 3-credit-hour course in Artificial Intelligence (AI) for previous batches in the 8th semester. This addition aims to equip students with modern analytical and computational competencies relevant to emerging scientific fields.
The meeting was attended by distinguished academic members and subject experts, including Prof. Dr. Muhammad Aslam, Professor of Chemistry, Bolan University of Medical and Health Sciences; Dr. Hanif Ur Rehman, Associate Professor, University of Turbat; Mr. Waseem Hameed, Chairperson, Department of Chemistry, University of Gwadar; Dr. Abdullah, Assistant Professor, University of Gwadar; and Ms. Sangeen Waleed, Lecturer, University of Gwadar.
The Board acknowledged the existing resource constraints of the University and agreed that the approved restructuring plan is both practical and aligned with national higher education standards. The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks from the Chair, reaffirming the University’s commitment to academic excellence, regulatory compliance, and continuous program development.
