In a significant move toward enhancing bilateral academic ties and fostering collaborative research, the University of Gwadar (UG) and the School of International Relations at Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), China, officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote joint research and academic exchange in the field of Area Studies, particularly focusing on the Coastal Belt Research Program. The MoU, signed on July 3, 2025, underscores a shared commitment to academic cooperation based on equality, mutual respect, and shared goals. The agreement outlines collaboration in research, talent development, joint symposia, and knowledge sharing between the two institutions. It also envisions the establishment of joint research projects and the promotion of academic and cultural exchange activities that support the long-term development of coastal regions in both countries. The signing ceremony was part of a broader academic seminar titled *“CPEC Cooperation and China-Pakistan Relations, held at Sun Yat-sen University’s Zhuhai Campus. The event featured high-level discussions involving scholars from both countries. Representing the University of Gwadar, Prof. Dr. Manzoor Ahmed, Pro Vice-Chancellor of UG and Executive Director of the Pak-China Technical and Vocational Institute Gwadar, delivered a compelling keynote presentation titled “Understanding Pakistan-China Relations Under CPEC and Beyond.” He emphasized the strategic importance of Gwadar in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), the need for infrastructure and industrial development, and the role of skilled human resources in transforming Balochistan’s economy. Prof. Manzoor also highlighted that Gwadar’s economic viability hinges on improved connectivity, transshipment capabilities, and technical cooperation with Chinese institutions. He called for a structured roadmap to develop Balochistan's mining and agribusiness potential, and emphasized the importance of technical and vocational training aligned with the needs of emerging industries in the region. The seminar brought together noted academics and institutional leaders, including participants from the University of Turbat and the University of Makran in Pakistan, and various scholars from Sun Yat-sen University. Discussions spanned economic collaboration, education exchange, regional development, and critical evaluations of CPEC’s progress and challenges. This collaboration marks a milestone for the University of Gwadar as it strengthens its international partnerships and contributes to the academic and socio-economic advancement of the coastal belt region. The partnership is expected to open new avenues for student and faculty exchange, joint research endeavors, and policy dialogues that benefit both China and Pakistan.
